Wheezes are high pitched whistling sounds that can occur during breathing. They are often associated with narrowing of the airways. They occur mostly with exhalation but can also occur with inhalation. A spirometry and a medical assessment can help distinguish between the various potential causes. Wheezing can sometimes be a sign of respiratory distress. Sudden changes in the frequency and quality of wheezes should be evaluated by a physician.
